A Music Playlist for Space Travelers

Recently my family and I visited the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City for an educational and entertaining afternoon. One of the highlights of the day was attending a movie in their IMAX 3D Dome Theater about “Space Junk.” The massive panoramic screen was an ideal surface to depict the vastness of space.

Space junk refers to inactive satellites and other manmade debris that is orbiting the earth. With outer space more congested than scientists projected, the risk of collisions of this space junk has increased. These collisions could cause the debris to grow exponentially, threatening the active global satellites that power our wireless world.

I have long been fascinated by space, and increasingly so in recent years. As a subscriber to National Geographic Magazine, I was amazed by a map of the universe, showing our Milky Way galaxy as a mere blemish in the big picture. Space and time are vast, measured in units of millions and billions. Viewed from afar, outer space is beautiful and has inspired many a musician, from classical composers, to electronic producers, to singer/songwriters.

Asked to build a playlist for an astronaut about to embark to outer space, here are some key selections. Enjoy, and please comment with your own track selections!
